Life is full of surprises, last night it came in the form of an invitation to the private screening of Cybela Clare’s new film, “Animal Magnetism.” I had only just met Cybela several days earlier through a mutual friend. Behind Ms. Clare’s glamorous public persona is a woman with a huge heart, great wit, intelligence and talent. The screening was held at one of New York’s great theatrical landmarks, the New York Amateur Comedy Club. “Animal Magnetism” was an animal rights activism documentary wrapped in a comedy. There are moments when the footage moved me. A good story will always be able to stand on its own apart from the production. When I saw elephants painting landscapes it stirred something deep within me, and when we were back at the fictitious part of the story line there was more amusement and laughter than I had anticipated as well. Ms. Clare’s co-star BabyRainbow the parrot in the role of Romeo turned out to be quite an actor. “Animal Magnetism” turned out to be an unexpected surprise.
